UK Ancestry Visas Guideline
Ancestry Visas enable commonwealth nationals who have a grandparent who was born in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man to enter the UK for a period of five years. Commonwealth nationals with a grandparent born in the Republic of Ireland prior to 31 March 1922 are also eligible to apply for a UK Ancestry Visa.
A UK Ancestry Visa gives the person a right to work in the UK, including working as a self-employed person or establishing their own business, without recourse to public funds. The applicant must intend to undertake employment once in the UK to support themselves.
Duration of a UK Ancestry Visa
A UK Ancestry Visa is issued for an initial 5 years. After this time the applicant may apply for ILR, however the person must have spent a continuous 5 years in the country and have current employment or can prove they seek employment.
Benefits of a UK Ancestry Visa
The application Process for a UK Ancestry Visa is based on family ties to the UK and no points based skills assessment is required. Candidates applying for this visa do not have to invest in the UK or set up a business. No restrictions are imposed as to what type of employment the visa holder may undertake once they are in the UK. This route is intended as a route to settlement in the UK.

Under a UK Ancestry Visa, spouse and dependent immigration are permitted.
Age
Applicants of a UK Ancestry Visa must be at least 17 years of age.
Ancestry
You may still be able to apply for a UK Ancestry Visa if either you or one of your parents is adopted; however reasonable poof of your adoption will need to be provided.
The following evidence will be required as part of your application:
- Your birth certificate
- Your marriage certificate, if you are married
- The full birth certificates of the parent and grandparent upon whose ancestry your application is based
- The marriage certificates of your parents and grandparents
- Legal adoption papers if you or your parents are adopted
